Beijing is a city that is located in the northeastern portion of the country of China. China is located in western Asia and is bordered by Mongolia and Russia to the north and the ocean to the east. Beijing is the capital city of the People's Republic of China as well as the second largest city in the country behind Shanghai. It is currently the ninth largest city in the world. Recently the city was voted as one of the world's greatest cities and was host to the 2008 Olympic Games. Mandarin is the primary spoken and written language in Beijing.

The city was originally named Peking, but later the name was changed to Beijing, which means "Northern Capital". The city has been home to the rulers of China for centuries. It is full of ancient temples and buildings that reflect the culture and history of the area. Beijing was the site of the Tiananmen Square incident during the Chinese Civil War during which Mao Zedong assumed control of China's government. It is now one of the most important financial and manufacturing cities in the country. In 2001 the Olympic Committee selected Beijing to be the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Beijing has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip below freezing from time to time. Snowfall occurs during the winter months, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.

The cuisine of Beijing is world famous. Perhaps the most famous dish is Peking Duck. Manhan Quanxi is one of the most expensive meals, but it is very culturally significant.

The most popular spot with tourists to Beijing is the Forbidden Palace which is an enormous palatial complex that was the home of the emperors for centuries. The Palace Museum is one of the most frequently visited places in the city.
