Shanghai is a city that is located on the western coastal region of China. It is the world's largest city by population with over thirteen million residents within the city and suburban limits. It is located on the banks of the Yangtze River, which is one of the largest rivers in China. Because of its location on the coastal mouth of the river the city has always been an important shipping port. The area around modern day Shanghai was first settled as a fishing and shipping city. Today it is still a major hub for fishing and shipping, but it has expanded its economy to include finance, commerce, fashion, and manufacturing. Mandarin is the primary spoken and written language in Shanghai.
The city was attacked by the Japanese Empire in 1932 but was able to fend off the invaders. In 1937 the city was attacked again and taken. It wasn't until Japan surrendered to the United States in 1945 that Shanghai was given back to the Chinese.
Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Typhoon rain storms occur in the summer time and can cause considerable flooding in the city.
The city is religiously diverse, with temples of Buddhism and Taoism throughout the city. There are even a few Catholic churches and a few Jewish synagogues.
There are two major airports that service the Shanghai area, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. These airports offer daily flights with major domestic carriers to cities in China, in addition to international carriers with flights to cities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. These two airports are two of the busiest airports in all of Asia and handle millions of passengers each year.
