Circle
Circle
is located in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, just 50 miles south
of the Arctic Circle. Circle was was mistakenly named by early
miners who thought it was in the Arctic Circle. It is located
on the banks of the Yukon River and was the biggest mining town
until the Klodike strike.
There is a post office and a campground at Mile 161 at the end
of the Steese Hwy. The Circle Hot Springs are still popular and
can be reached by the junction at Mile 127.8 Steese Hwy.The Circle
Mining District is the oldest in the state and is still active.
A state-maintained gravel airstrip 3,600 feet in length is nearby.
Heavy river traffic including canoeists brings activity to the
area in the summers.
