About
Hoonah
Hoonah
is located in Yakutat Borough on the northeast shore of Chichagof
Island across Icy Strait from the entrance to Glacier Bay. It
is about 40 miles west of Juneau. Commercial fishing is the main
activity here, with a large cold storage facility.
Hoonah means "village by the cliff." It is the pricipal village
for the Huna, a Tlingit tribe which has occupied the area for
centuries. Hoonah is the largest Tlingit village in southeast
Alaska.
Seiners and trollers homeport in the quiet harbor, also popular
with boaters waiting to enter Glacier Bay, where access to recreational
boaters is limited in summer months in Glacier Bay National Park
and Preserve.
