About
Petersburg
Petersburg
is the "Little Norway" of Alaska. Its picturesque waterfront
features buildings on tall pilings, docks, commercial and pleasure
craft and the largest home-based halibut fleet in Alaska. Many
commercial fishing boats fill the three harbors during peak season.
Each of the 30 window shutters in the Sons of Norway Hall are
decorated with colorful rosemalings (Norwegian tole painting).
Other rosemalings can be found around town as well. A working
Viking ship reproduction decorates the parking lot, and the soon-to-be-built
Petersburg Fishermen's Memorial Park will encompass the entire
south side adjoining Hammer Slough. Ground breaking and dedication
is scheduled for Syttende Mai - May 17, 1998.
