Duncan is a great place to live!
Duncan, lies five miles from the border of New Mexico in the extreme
southeastern corner of Greenlee County. It was first known as
Purdy in the post office register of 1883, and founded by two
men whose names were Purdy and Bachelor. Purdy originated as a
way station on the ore haulage line that ran between Clifton and
Silver City, N.M. The name was changed to Duncan in the early
1880's when the Arizona and New Mexico Railroad came through.
There are two versions for the naming of the Town of Duncan: One
story is told that the rail stop was owned by a man named Duncan
Smith, during the "wild west" time period, the town
in that era was a stop and watering point for many of the outlaws.
The other story, says it was named for James Duncan who was with
the Arizona Copper Company.
