About
Foresthill
Foresthill
is a small community that sits proudly among the tall pines of
the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Located 17 miles northeast of Auburn,
it enjoys snowy winters, wonderful restaurants, and year round
outdoor recreation in stunningly beautiful surroundings.
Shaded by beautiful conifer groves that lend credence to the name
of this town straddled on a ridge between the north and middle
forks of the American River, the Placer County community of Foresthill
was once at the center of a rich placer area with many gold camps.
One of the most prosperous was Yankee Jim's. founded in 1850 by
a man named Robinson, who was hanged the following year for horse
stealing.
A few miles from Foresthill, Michigan Bluff was another hydraulic
mining center; once it was the location of a dry goods store operated
by Leland Stanford, who went on to fame as one of the "Big
Four" of the transcontinental railroad and later as founder
of a great university. Follow the winding Mosquito Ridge Road
to the Placer Grove of the sequoia big trees, an isolated small
grove of these giants.
