A Traveler's Guide to Brownsville

Brownsville is a city that is located in the extreme southern portion of the state of Texas. It is currently the fifteenth largest city in the state. Brownsville was originally a fort that was constructed in 1845 along the US/Mexico border. The fort was named Fort Texas and the Mexican Army laid siege to it during the Mexican American War in 1846. One of the soldiers who died in the siege was Major Jacob Brown and the fort and eventually the city was named Brownsville in his honor.

It was decided that Brownsville would be the site for the Junior College of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, which has grown to become the University of Texas at Brownsville. The primary source of income for the city is the Port of Brownsville. The city’s location on the water has made it a valuable port for international shipping and trade.

The weather in Brownsville is a semi-arid climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the low 90’s Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing.

The Brownsville Heritage Complex is a collection of art galleries and museums in downtown Brownsville that display works of art from Mexico, the local area of Brownsville, and around the world. The city is very much a university town. The University of Texas as Brownsville is one of the largest employers in the city and thousands of students attend there each year. Texas Southmost College, South Texas Vocational Technical Institute, and the University of Texas Health Science Center are all other schools of higher learning in the city.

Brownsville is serviced by the Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport. Only two domestic airlines serve this airport. Continental Airlines offers service to Houston and American Eagle Airlines offers service to Dallas-Fort Worth.
