A Traveler's Guide to Davenport

Davenport is a city that is located in the eastern portion of the US state of Iowa in Scott County. Iowa is located in the mid-western region of the United States along the Mississippi River. Davenport is the seat of government for Scott County as well as the largest city in the county. English is the primary spoken and written language in Davenport.

The city was founded in 1836 by Antoine LeClaire. He named the city after a good friend of his named George Davenport who was a colonel who fought in the Black Hawk War. The city began to grow after the Rock Island Railroad Company built the first railroad bridge over the Mississippi River in 1856. The bridge connected Davenport to Rock Island in Illinois. This caused trade with Chicago to be much easier and brought large numbers of visitors and residents to Davenport. Today Davenport is home to several large companies such as Ralston Purina and Oscar Mayer.

Davenport has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Because of its location on the Mississippi River, the area is plagued by occasional flooding that can be severe at times.

There are several sites of interest in Davenport. They include the Figge Art Museum, the Davenport Skybridge, the River Music Experience, and the IMAX Theater. The Figge Art Museum is home to the National Center for Midwest Art and Design. The Putnam Museum houses the IMAX Theater and is one of the first museums to be built west of the Mississippi River.

The closest commercial airport to Davenport is the Quad City International Airport in Moline, Illinois. It offers connecting flights to larger nearby airports such as Chicago and Dallas.
