A Traveler's Guide to Durham

Durham is the sixth largest city in the state of North Carolina. It is located very close to the city of Raleigh; in fact the two cities are often referred to as Raleigh-Durham because of their proximity. Following the American War for Independence the city of Durham became a center for agricultural plantations. Many African slaves were brought to Durham to work on the plantations. Eventually railroads were built through Durham and the city became a refueling depot for the locomotives. This brought more business and more residents to the area.

During the US Civil War Durham was the site of several battles between Union and Confederate forces. The local tobacco fields were ravaged by the war, but after the surrender of the Confederacy the tobacco fields were replanted and tobacco became the cash crop for the entire Durham area. The largest of these tobacco factories was the one owned and operated by the Duke family.

The Duke family had such an impact on the region of Durham that when it was decided that the city would build a university they voted to name it Duke University in honor of the Duke family. Duke University is a prestigious institution of higher learning and participates in over 20 sports at the NCAA Division 1 ACC level. The number of skilled, educated workers is very high in Durham, which has attracted several businesses to move to the city.

Durham experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures generally staying in the 80's and 90's Fahrenheit and mild winters with temperatures generally staying in the 40's and 50's Fahrenheit. Rain occurs frequently, but falls most heavily during the months of July and August. The Nasher Museum of Art has produced some world renowned art exhibits and is the premiere art gallery in Durham. But by far, the most popular draw to the city is the Duke men's basketball program, which has won several NCAA championships. Raleigh-Durham International Airport is the closest airport to downtown Durham and services most major domestic carriers.
