A Traveler's Guide to McKinney

McKinney is a city that is located in the northeastern portion of the US state of Texas.  It is the government seat of Collin County and is the second fastest growing city in the United States among cities with a population over ten thousand.  It was recently ranked as the fifth best place to live by Money Magazine.  McKinney is part of the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.  English is the primary language of McKinney.

The city gets its name from Collin McKinney, who was an original signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.  The land where the city now sits was donated by William Davis, and the city was incorporated in 1913.  McKinney was once the commercial center of the surrounding area.  It offered flour, cotton, cotton mills, oil mills, textiles, and manufacturing products to the surrounding area.  Today the city is primarily a suburb/commuting city for the neighboring cities of Plano and Dallas.

McKinney has a humid, subtropical climate, which means hot, humid summers and warm winters.  Summer temperatures can get into the 90's Fahrenheit but winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing.  The city receives most of its rainfall during the months of May and September.

In August of 2010 Money Magazine selected McKinney as number five on their list of "Best Places to Live in the Country".  The magazine quoted "Lots of towns near Dallas have low crime, affordable homes, and good jobs; McKinney is no exception. What makes it stand out is its gem of a downtown... Though McKinney has grown like mad over the past decade, you'd never suspect it when driving through its tree-filled communities surrounded by ponds, parks, and hiking trails."  Because of its proximity to Dallas and Plano, McKinney has become a popular spot with commuters and tele-commuters.  McKinney has developed into a small town with the conveniences of a big city nearby.

The closest major airport to McKinney is the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport which is within driving distance of downtown.  Dallas-Fort Worth offers daily flights to cities all over the US, Mexico, Canada, Asia, Europe, and South America.
