A Traveler's Guide to Peoria

Peoria is a city that is located in the southwestern portion of the state of Arizona. It is a major suburb of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. It is the fourth largest city in the state by land area and the ninth by population. The name Peoria is of Native American descent, mainly Illini. It is a combination of words that mean "prairie fire". The city was named after Peoria, Illinois. It was recently voted as one of the top 100 places to live in the United States.

The city was incorporated in 1954. Prior to that the city was governed informally. In 1920 a library was constructed and a school was established. This combined with the cotton and other agricultural farms around the area drew more people to the area around Peoria. The city continued to be a key producer of cotton until World War 2. At that time Luke Air Force base was built nearby and the number of residents skyrocketed. The city has changed its identity from that of an agricultural community to that of a suburb to Phoenix. Many residents of Peoria work in Phoenix and commute. Several professional baseball teams have built facilities in Peoria for spring practice. The warm weather in the city is perfect for baseball teams to practice in during the spring months. Currently the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners maintain complexes in the city. The Peoria Sports Complex attracts tourists year round. There are many concerts, sporting events, festivals, and shows that come to the complex. This allows local restaurants and hotels to make money.

Peoria has an arid climate, which means little to no rainfall most months. The summers are hot and the winters are mild. Summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees at times, but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Even though rain doesn't come very often, it comes the most in the months of January through March.
