A Traveler's Guide to St. Augustine

St. Augustine is a city that is located in the central region of the US state of Florida. Florida is the most extreme southeastern state in the continental United States. It is bordered to the north by Alabama and Georgia, to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the south by the Caribbean Sea, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. It is the seat of government for St. Johns County. English is the official language of St. Augustine.

St. Augustine has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. Thunderstorms can be severe from time to time. The city is vulnerable to hurricanes because of its location on the eastern coast of Florida.

St. Augustine is one of the oldest permanently inhabited spots in North America. Because of that it is full of historic sites and markers. The city was settled by the Spanish in 1513 by Ponce de Leon. The city became a popular port for shipping vessels because of its natural harbor. The city was first owned by the Spanish, then the British, then the Spanish, then the Confederate States of America, and finally the United States of America.

Some of the most popular sites to see in the city include the Bridge of Lions, the Lightner Museum, the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, the San Sebastian Winery, and the Fort Matanzas National Monument. The fort monument is the remains of an 18th century Spanish fort that still stands in St. Augustine. It guards the Matanzas Inlet, which is a rear water entrance to the city. The fort and monument are only accessible through guided boat tours.
