Once upon a time far away in history, Colombia was in the middle of drug cartels, gang wars and volatile politics. That’s what kept tourists out and the economy down for a long time. Thankfully, in recent years, things have changed. And we must say for the better. Today, Colombia has a bit of everything you expect from global destinations. The charm of Europe, the exotica of South East Asia and the party vibes of the Caribbean. If you are still thinking twice about Colombia, here’s what will change your mind.

Safe and sound

The minute someone utters the name Colombia, you still have those thoughts about safety for tourists. The good news is that the crime rates are at an all-time low, thanks to the administration, which has worked 24/7 for years to improve security, development and tourism. You won’t feel left out as a tourist as there are many like you out there in Colombia. The locals aren’t complaining as their economy is booming.

Life is a beach here

Colombia has a whopping 300 beaches. That’s almost 1 beach per day for the rest of the year. And yet every beach has its own charm, flora, fauna and landscapes. From luxury resorts to eco-living places, you’ll get them all here. Our bet, try the laid-back beaches on the Caribbean coast close to the beautiful city of Cartagena. Like some privacy and me time? Try heading to virgin tropical beaches on the island of San Andres and Providencia.

Brew some memories

Nothing like a cup of coffee in one hand and overlooking the versatile landscapes of Colombia in the backdrop. You’ll often wonder, what’s better? The caffeine or the view. We don’t blame you as Colombian coffee is one of the finest in the world. Not just coffee exports, coffee tourism has become a big hit of late in the country. There are plenty of coffee tours around Colombia where you get to learn the ins and outs of the farming, extraction, roasting and production of coffee. Guess what? There’s another bonus too. You get to taste a wide variety of coffee on these tours.  There’s even an amusement park based on coffee called the Parque Nacional del Café. Can you beat that?

The Festivals

You can’t imagine South America without some fiesta. Don’t worry Colombia has plenty of action in that department. Try heading for the Carnaval de Barranquilla, the Carnaval de Bogota and the Carnival of Blacks and Whites in Cali. You can witness a sea of people during these festivals enjoying the verve, flavors, booze, parades and performances together. You’ll wonder whether this country ever had turbulent times?

A foodies’ paradise

Colombia has a large spread of nature and food too. Try Arepas, corn patties stuffed with cheese, veggies or meats. This is a popular go-to food and the perfect comfort food for anyone who wants a hearty meal on the run. Then there’s Ajiaco and Sancocho, which are traditional preparations made from meats and veggies. If you are a carnivore, try Bandeja Paisa, a traditional dish made from different meats served with fried eggs, rice, beans, and plantains. Burp!
