John Allen and Elisha Rumsey founded Ann Arbor in 1824 and was originally named "Annsarbour". Most people believe that the name was chosen to commemorate the name of one of the founders’ wives who was named Anne. The most important year in the history of Ann Arbor is 1837, which is the year that the University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor. Railroads connected the city to the rest of the northern states and soon people came to visit and attend the college by the hundreds. The city was incorporated in 1851 and the city soon swelled with immigrants from Western Europe. Recently the city was ranked 27th in the list of the "Top 100 Small Cities in America".
Ann Arbor has a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip into below freezing Fahrenheit from time to time. Snowfall occurs periodically, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August. Blizzard conditions are common during the winter months.
There are several venues for the performing arts in Ann Arbor. These include the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, the Ann Arbor Civic ballet, and the Performance Network Theatre. The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is an interactive science and history establishment that is quite popular with visitors and locals alike. The University of Michigan competes in over 25 men’s and women’s sports in the NCAA Division 1 Big Ten conference. The Wolverine’s football program is the winningest program in the country and is an annual national contender. Michigan Stadium is one of the largest football stadiums in the world, with a seating capacity of almost 110,000.
