A Traveler's Guide to Berkeley

Berkeley is a city that is located in the northern coastal region of the US state of California. California is located on the western Pacific coast of the US and is the largest state by population. Richmond is a part of the greater San Francisco Bay metropolitan area. It is a suburb of San Francisco as well as a hub for major industry. English is the primary spoken and written language in Berkeley, although the population is very diverse and several other languages are spoken by residents.

The area was first settled by Europeans in 1776 when Spanish explorers discovered the entrance to San Francisco Bay. The area was primarily used for farms and ranches because of the open, fertile land. The city finally began growing in 1866 when the College of California moved there from Oakland to the south. The city then was named Berkeley in honor of Bishop George Berkeley. A few years later the Transcontinental Railroad reached Oakland to the south, which brought residents and visitors from all the way across the country to the region. Soon the University of California bought out the College of California and renamed the facility the University of California at Berkeley. Today the city's economy relies heavily on the income generated by the university and it's thousands of visitors each year.

Berkeley has a Mediterranean climate which means mild temperatures year round. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 70's or 80's Fahrenheit while winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer is the dry season with scarce rain. Most of the areas rainfall occurs during the months of January through March.

Berkeley is within driving distance of San Francisco International and San Jose International Airports. These airports offer daily flights with major domestic carriers to cities in the US, in addition to international carriers with flights to cities in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
