A Traveler's Guide to Miami Gardens

Miami Gardens is a city that is located in the southeastern portion of the US state of Florida. It is located in Miami-Dade County and was named after the major street that runs through it, Miami Gardens Drive. The city was incorporated fairly recently, just in 2003, and is the largest city in Florida with a majority of African American residents. English is the primary spoken and written language in Miami Gardens.

The city of Miami Gardens was created as people left the larger nearby city of Miami and moved to less crowded suburban areas. This move began in the 1970's and has continued until today. The cost of living in Miami Gardens is much lower than in Miami and the city has made efforts to keep the cost of living down in order to attract more residents.

Miami Gardens has a humid subtropical climate, which means hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90's Fahrenheit from time to time but winter temperatures rarely dip below 40. Rainfall occurs year round, but it occurs most heavily during the summer months of June through August. The area is vulnerable to hurricanes because of its location in southern Florida. Several large hurricanes have hit the area in the past, but city officials are accustomed to this danger and keep the city well prepared for it.

Sun Life Stadium, one of the largest sports stadiums in the state, is located in Miami Gardens. The Miami Dolphins of the NFL and the Florida Marlins of the MLB both play there. The stadium is also where the University of Miami Hurricanes play their home games. The Hurricanes compete in the NCAA Division 1 Atlantic Coast conference. The stadium is also home to the annual Orange Bowl college football game. Another sporting venue in Miami Gardens is the Calder Race Course, which hosts races and various events throughout the year.

Miami International Airport is the closest airport to Miami Gardens and offers flights to cities in the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East daily.
